Buying 12.47 kV to 4.16 kV unit substation transformers in Texas

Arch Point Recovery offers a take-all lot of nine liquid-filled unit substation transformers in Irving, Texas: five 1,500 kVA units, two 2,000 kVA units and two 3,750 kVA units. All are specified for 12.47 kV primary and 4.16 kV secondary service. Price, drawings, records and actual unit photos are available on request.

Current market context

In its August 10, 2026 grid supply-chain update, the U.S. Department of Energy described long lead times for critical grid equipment and proposed work on manufacturing capacity, standardization, refurbishment and reuse. This helps explain why project teams investigate available equipment alongside new factory orders. It does not establish the price, condition or delivery schedule of this lot. DOE: Strengthening America's Grid Supply Chain.

DOE's supply-chain analysis, reviewed October 1, 2026, reports historical distribution-transformer lead times rising from three to six months in 2019 to 12 to 30 months in 2023, identified on the page as its latest available data. Those historical distribution figures are not a current quotation for 12.47 kV / 4.16 kV unit substations. Ask manufacturers and equipment holders for project-specific schedules. What a 4.16 kV secondary means for the buyer

This lot is intended for a compatible medium-voltage distribution design. Potential applications include industrial facilities, mines, water and wastewater plants, and campuses operating appropriate 4.16 kV systems. Suitability depends on the actual site design and nameplate configuration.

These transformers do not provide 480 V output. A data center or other facility using lower-voltage equipment would need a compatible upstream design and further transformation where required. Buying available transformers without resolving that voltage match can leave an expensive equipment mismatch.

Have the engineer compare phase configuration, grounding, operating frequency, impedance, basic impulse level, taps, cooling ratings and terminations with the site's drawings. Transformer kVA is an apparent-power rating; usable real power depends on power factor and operating conditions. Do not treat the sum of the nameplates as a guaranteed site MW capacity.

Separate the new and refurbished units

The two 3,750 kVA units are specified as 12,470 to 4,160Y/2,400 V. Request their individual manufacturer identification, original year, refurbishment scope, replacement parts and test records. Their refurbishment history deserves a separate review from the seven new units. For all nine, ask how the equipment was stored, moved and preserved.

Identify the insulating fluid

The seller describes the fluid as less-flammable and biodegradable. That description does not identify a specific product or establish an installation approval. Request fluid brand and type, safety data sheets, fill or replacement records and any relevant listing documentation for each transformer.

The Bureau of Reclamation's Transformer Fire Protection guide, updated September 2016 and reviewed October 1, 2026, discusses natural and synthetic ester fluids as alternatives to mineral oil, including their fire and environmental characteristics. This is engineering background, not a claim that these units contain a particular ester. Current project requirements and the actual fluid documentation must govern the installation. Agree acceptance testing before purchase

Ask a qualified transformer testing firm to set the scope, acceptance criteria and responsible parties in writing. A useful procurement discussion covers:

The Bureau of Reclamation's April 2005 transformer diagnostics manual, reviewed October 1, 2026, explains insulation-resistance, turns-ratio and dissolved-gas analysis. It also cautions about interpreting DGA for new or de-energized equipment. For these reportedly never-energized units, ask the testing specialist what a fluid sample can establish and what requires commissioning or operating history; a clean sample alone is not proof of service performance. Use this historical manual for background, with current OEM instructions and the project's acceptance specification controlling the work. Bureau of Reclamation transformer diagnostics manual.

Build the freight and installation budget

The lot is offered take-all, FOB Irving. Request certified weights, dimensions, center-of-gravity information, lifting drawings and transport restrictions before asking carriers to quote. Clarify who provides cranes, loading, securing, permits, insurance, unloading and any fluid handling. Lowboy trailers are not included.

Compare the complete delivered scope: equipment, inspection, any remedial work, heavy haul, installation, protection changes and commissioning. Obtain an explicit collection window and written loading and transfer-of-risk terms. Reference photographs are representative only; arrange current unit-specific photographs or an inspection before commitment.

FAQ

Does this lot supply 480 V power?

No. The specified secondary is 4.16 kV. Any lower-voltage loads need an appropriate additional transformer and distribution design.

Are all nine transformers new?

No. Seven are described as new 2024 Square D / Schneider Electric units, never energized or commissioned. Two are described as OEM-refurbished and set in place but never energized. These condition statements are seller-reported.

What sizes and winding materials are included?

There are five 1,500 kVA aluminum-wound units, two 2,000 kVA copper-wound units and two 3,750 kVA aluminum-wound units. Request individual nameplates and drawings to confirm the complete configuration.

Is the fluid confirmed as FR3 or another natural ester?

No specific fluid product is stated. The seller reports less-flammable biodegradable fluid. Request the actual product identification, safety data sheet and unit records rather than assuming a brand or approval.

Can these serve a data-center project?

They may fit a project with a compatible 12.47 kV to 4.16 kV distribution design. The engineer must confirm ratings, protection, grounding and any further voltage transformation; these units do not directly establish compatibility with server equipment.

Are the public images photographs of the actual units?

The displayed image is a branded placeholder. Reference photos are representative only. Ask for current photos tied to the actual serial numbers and arrange inspection where needed.

Can I buy individual units, and are trailers included?

The offering is a take-all lot of nine. Lowboy trailers are not included. Request the current lot price and written pickup, loading and freight terms for Irving, Texas.
