Buying 2,600 kW Caterpillar 3516E generators from South Africa

Eleven 2023 Caterpillar 3516E diesel generator sets are offered through Arch Point Recovery in South Africa. Each is specified at 3,250 kVA / 2,600 kW standby, 400 V, three-phase, 50 Hz and 1,500 rpm. New, never-used condition and zero operating hours are seller-reported. Price, serial-specific records and actual unit photos are available on request.

Why buyers are reviewing available large generators

In its August 4, 2026 results announcement, Cummins reported strong demand for data-center standby power and further investment in its power-generation business. This provides current context for buyers comparing available equipment with new factory orders; it does not establish demand, value or a delivery date for this particular lot. Read Cummins' second-quarter 2026 announcement.

An equipment search should compare two written schedules: delivery of an available unit after inspection, conversion and freight, and delivery of a new unit built for the site. Ask for current quotations instead of treating a general lead-time headline as the schedule for your project.

Start with duty, voltage and frequency

Potential buyers include industrial operators, mines, engineering contractors and facilities seeking large standby sets for a compatible 50 Hz system. A data-center application needs a site-specific review of redundancy, load steps, controls, fuel autonomy, emissions and service support. Purchasing generator sets alone does not provide a complete commissioned power station.

Caterpillar's 3516E HPD specification sheet LEHE1993-09, reviewed October 1, 2026, distinguishes standby and prime ratings and lists a 3,250 kVA / 2,600 kW standby configuration at 50 Hz. The sheet covers configurations in a product family; its options, warranty language and certification statements do not automatically apply to this lot. Read the Caterpillar 3516E specification sheet.

For a 60 Hz destination, require a conversion proposal before paying for equipment or freight. The seller reports that an RPM change can support conversion, but a Cat dealer must confirm the complete engine/alternator configuration, controls, cooling, voltage and achievable output. In STAMFORD | AvK application guidance AGN 046, reviewed October 1, 2026, operating voltage ranges depend on frequency and winding design. This is general engineering background, not identification of the alternators installed on these Cat sets. Read the alternator voltage and frequency guidance.

Qualify a U.S. import before booking transport

EPA's stationary-engine compliance guidance, reviewed October 1, 2026, describes requirements under 40 CFR Part 60, Subpart IIII for applicable stationary compression-ignition engines. Engine classification and intended operation matter. Have the project team resolve emergency versus non-emergency use and applicable installation requirements. EPA stationary-engine compliance guidance.

EPA's import guidance, reviewed October 1, 2026, also makes clear that imported engines must satisfy the applicable emissions requirements or qualify under an appropriate exemption. Ask for the actual certification label, engine family, serial numbers and supporting documents. A 50 Hz export-market generator may not have the required U.S. certification; a manufacturer brochure is not a substitute for the unit's records. EPA guidance on importing engines.

Build the inspection and freight scope

  1. Match the serial list to current photographs, manufacturing records, hour meters and load-test reports. Clarify whether reported zero operating hours excludes factory testing.
  2. Review storage and preservation since 2023, consumables, corrosion condition and service needed before commissioning.
  3. Obtain an itemized scope for radiators, exhaust, controls, breakers, fuel equipment, batteries, manuals and any enclosure. Confirm warranty and inspection rights in writing.
  4. Request shipping dimensions, individual weights, lifting drawings and packing details. Nine units are reported in original packaging; two are prepared in a shipping container. Confirm what is included in each shipment.
  5. Quote collection, rigging, export handling, ocean freight, insurance, import costs, destination delivery and unloading as separate lines.

South African Revenue Service goods-declaration guidance, reviewed October 1, 2026, requires export declarations except where a specified exemption applies. Have the appointed freight and customs team establish the export documents and destination requirements for the actual shipment. SARS goods-declaration guidance.

The seller's approximately 10-day time-to-ship estimate is subject to confirmation. It is not a promise of arrival at your site. A useful comparison is the total delivered and commissioned cost for your required duty, including any conversion and compliance work.

FAQ

How many generators are offered?

Eleven sets are offered, each with a stated standby rating of 3,250 kVA / 2,600 kW. Confirm current availability and whether your requested quantity can be purchased separately.

Are these new generators?

They were manufactured in 2023 and are described by the seller as new, never used and showing zero operating hours. Request current photos, storage history and records tied to each serial number.

Can they supply continuous 2,600 kW power?

The quoted 2,600 kW is a standby rating. Obtain an approved rating and operating-duty assessment for the intended application; do not use the standby number as a continuous-duty commitment.

Can a buyer convert them to 60 Hz?

The seller reports conversion potential, but it requires Cat dealer confirmation of the exact engine, alternator, controls, voltage, output and work scope. The equipment is currently offered at 50 Hz.

Are they ready for U.S. import and operation?

Eligibility must be established from the actual engine labels, certification records, intended use and site requirements. Export-market configuration or a generic product sheet does not establish U.S. compliance.

Does the ten-day shipping estimate include arrival?

No. The seller estimates approximately ten days to ship, subject to confirmation. Freight transit, customs clearance, final delivery and unloading need their own schedule.

What should I include in a quote request?

Send your required quantity, destination, voltage, frequency, operating duty and deadline. Request unit photos, serials, load-test reports, the included-equipment list, inspection terms and a written freight scope.
